Types of Attic Insulation

Attic insulation contractor serves a dual purpose: it helps stabilize indoor temperatures so you don’t need to crank up the AC in summer and it reduces heating costs in winter. It also reduces wear and tear on your furnace and air conditioning equipment and prolongs their life.

There are several types of attic insulation:

Fiberglass batt insulation (typically made of glass fibers) is the least expensive and the easiest to install. It also provides excellent sound insulation and moisture resistance.

Choosing the Right Attic Insulation for Your Climate

Cellulose blown-in insulation is more expensive but is environmentally friendly, made from recycled paper products such as newspapers and cardboard. It is applied using a blowing machine and fills gaps more evenly than fiberglass batt insulation. It is also flame-retardant, a feature that makes it a good choice around attic vents, chimneys and wiring penetrations.

Loose-fill insulation is a combination of cellulose, mineral wool, or fiberglass and is applied with a blowing machine. It is best for filling tight spaces and gaps. It is also great for sound insulation and is available in many different R-values to meet your home’s energy efficiency needs.

A radiant barrier is a specialized type of insulation that serves to reflect the sun’s heat rather than absorbing it like most other insulation. It is installed on top of existing insulation and lowers cooling costs in the summer.
